Methodology

Open, reproducible — computed from our own archive node

Definition

Value Days Destroyed Multiple — daily USD value-days-destroyed, normalized by its own trailing-year average. Flags dollar-weighted old-coin distribution near tops.

Formula

VDD_mult = (CDD × price) / rolling₃₆₅_mean(CDD × price)

How we compute it

VDD = CDD × price (USD coin-days destroyed). The multiple divides today's VDD by its trailing ~365-day mean (min 30 days). Unitless and NaN-safe.

Provenance · Every on-chain metric traces back to our own self-hosted Bitcoin archive node — no third-party data vendor sits in the path. We extract the full UTXO lifecycle (each output's creation height/time, value, and the height/time it was later spent), join it against an independent USD price oracle, and roll it up into daily aggregates. The metric formulas are pure functions over those aggregates (src/pipeline/formulas.py), so any value on this page can be reproduced from the published daily archive.

Interpretation

Values above 1 mean more dollar-weighted old-coin spending than the trailing-year norm; sustained high readings cluster near cycle tops.

Caveats & limitations

  • ·A zero trailing baseline yields NaN rather than a spurious value.
