Definition
Percentage of circulating supply held by short-term holders — coins younger than 155 days.
Formula
pct_sth = sth_supply_btc / total_supply_btcHow we compute it
We track STH/LTH supply with a stock-and-flow model: each day, newly-minted coins enter STH; coins crossing the 155-day threshold age into LTH; per-cohort spends reduce the relevant bucket. STH supply is the residual (total − LTH).
Interpretation
High % STH = lots of recently-acquired, weak-handed supply (speculative, top-heavy). Low % STH = supply is maturing into long-term hands (accumulation).
Caveats & limitations
- ·The 155-day STH/LTH split is the industry convention, not a behavioural certainty. The stock-and-flow ageing relies on accurate per-cohort spent flows; days with sparse cohort data fall back to aggregate spends.
Current % STH reading
As of 2026-10-16, Bitcoin’s % STH is 18.5%, compared with 24.0% one year earlier (2025-10-16). The series has 6,490 daily readings from 2009-01-09 to 2026-10-16, computed from our own full-archive Bitcoin node and refreshed every day.
Historical extremes
The highest % STH on record is 100.0% on 2009-01-09; the lowest is 16.1% on 2026-07-26. Readings near either end of that range have historically coincided with cycle turning points — use the chart above to see where today sits relative to past extremes.
