Definition

Supply in Profit — the share of circulating supply whose cost basis is below the current price.

Formula

SIP = clip(0.31 × ln(MVRV) + 0.574, 0, 1)

How we compute it

Modelled from MVRV via a log fit (the closed form above), clamped to [0, 1]. This avoids re-scanning the full UTXO set each day while tracking the true profitable-supply share closely.

Provenance · Every on-chain metric traces back to our own self-hosted Bitcoin archive node — no third-party data vendor sits in the path. We extract the full UTXO lifecycle (each output's creation height/time, value, and the height/time it was later spent), join it against an independent USD price oracle, and roll it up into daily aggregates. The metric formulas are pure functions over those aggregates (src/pipeline/formulas.py), so any value on this page can be reproduced from the published daily archive.

Interpretation

Above ~0.95 = nearly all supply in profit (overheated, distribution likely). Low readings (large share underwater) accompany capitulation bottoms.

> 0.7Most supply in profit
0.4 – 0.7Mixed
< 0.4Most supply underwater

Caveats & limitations

  • ·MODELLED from MVRV (log fit), not a direct per-UTXO count of profitable coins. The true UTXO-level profit share (`utxo_profit_share`) is a separate, direct measure used where available.
