Definition
Coin Days Destroyed — the total coin-days (coins × days held) extinguished when outputs are spent on a given day. The canonical measure of old-coin movement.
Formula
CDD = Σ (value_btc × holding_days) over all outputs spent on the dayHow we compute it
For each spent output we know its value and exactly how long it sat unspent (spend height/time minus creation height/time, from the UTXO record). CDD multiplies value by holding age and sums across the day — a direct on-chain measurement, no estimation.
Interpretation
Spikes mean long-dormant coins are moving — often distribution by experienced holders. Sustained low CDD means old coins are sitting still (HODLing).
Caveats & limitations
- ·Raw CDD is heavy-tailed: single ancient-coin moves dominate. Use CDD-clean / binary-CDD / supply-adjusted variants for trend work.

Current CDD reading
As of 2026-10-16, Bitcoin’s CDD is 10,152,216, compared with 12,047,588 one year earlier (2025-10-16). The series has 6,236 daily readings from 2009-01-12 to 2026-10-16, computed from our own full-archive Bitcoin node and refreshed every day.
Historical extremes
The highest CDD on record is 518,268,262 on 2024-05-28; the lowest is 20.87 on 2009-09-16. Readings near either end of that range have historically coincided with cycle turning points — use the chart above to see where today sits relative to past extremes.
